Neo Se Rei De
Good afternoon and welcome to the Daily Lunchtime News on Channel News Singapore. My name is Neo Se Rei De. The date today is 22 July, 1964, the time now is 1.02pm.
The main story today is about the recent race riot happening between the Chinese and the Malays. The riot started yesterday at about 5pm between Kallang and Geylang Serai. The riot is still occurring right now as I speak, and it doesn’t seem like it will die down soon. We have our foster brother reporters Ma Ley Ray Po Da and Chai Nee Ray Po Da live at the riot scene. Tell me, guys, what’s happening there right now?

Chai Nee Ray Po Da
Well, Neo Se Rei De, things are very chaotic, as you can see behind me. The two groups of rioters are all fired up and so far, four deaths have been recorded yesterday, and the numbers rose by two today, and they may be more not recorded yet.

Ma Ley Ray Po Da
The reason the two of us are here is that the groups won’t speak to anyone whose race aren’t the same as theirs. And it’s also because we are foster brothers. Now, here we have the leader of the Malay side of the riot, Muhammad Slim Bte Rul, who agreed to be interviewed.

Mu Slim Rul
Ah, just call me Mu Slim Rul, all my friends do.

Ma Ley Ray Po Da
Eh, ok, Mu Slim Rul. Now, tell me how all this started.

Mu Slim Rul
Ok, this is what happened. Yesterday, a lot of us Muslims went to the Padang to celebrate Muhammad’s birthday. You know, the prophet Muhammad? Ah, after the traditional speeches, we went to Geylang to celebrate some more, cause Geylang so shiok right, got so many sexy girls and good drinks… yeah, but on our way, some of us, including me, we want to go toilet for a while, so we go another way from the others. It’s ok, because I know how to go to the main point at Geylang, I was one of the birthday planners then. I think it was about 5 something when one stupid Chinese policeman come and tell us that we must go back and join the group. I say that we want to go toilet a while, but he insist, then we argue a while. Then suddenly, the policeman took out his black club thing and whack one of the loud Malay people on the head! Wah, so much blood come out and I think he died there. Then I scold the policeman, “Eh! Why you beat him? He only want to go toilet, then you beat him for what? Who call you stop us from going to toilet, huh?” Then of course he very angry, saying that it’s his fault for wasting his time cause we never listen to him in the first place, then we got very very angry, and some people, not me, go and hit him until I think he also die. I don’t know, I never check. Then, there was a lot of Chinese what you call them, passer-by? Ah, they very kaypo, then some brave one come and scold us for beating the policeman, so we beat them for scolding us, and we have been here since then. Eh, wait, no, at about 9 something at night, some people came with all the armor and they say that the government say that he declare a curfew at 9.30, and the guards start to stop the fighting. Then we just stare and curse at them until about 6 in the morning, when the guards say that the curfew is over, then we start fighting again lor. I tell you, fighting is very tiring, and now I damn hungry and thirsty from shouting, but I cannot leave! I must stand for my race! So I will fight on!

Ma Ley Ray Po Da
Thank you, Mu Slim Rul, for letting me hear your side of the story.

Mu Slim Rul
Eh, no problemo. We will be here with you no matter what, not like the stupid Chinese people! *Malays cheer*

Ma Ley Ray Po Da
Ah, ok, I’ll take your word for that. Now, Chai Nee Ray Po Da, I’ll hand over to you to explain the
Chinese’s views.

Chai Nee Ray Po Da
Thank you Ma Ley Ray Po Da. I’m here at the Chinese side of the riot, where with me right now is the leader of the Chinese group, Mann Da Rin Rok. Thanks for letting me interview you,
Mister Mann Da.

Mann Da Rin Rok
Ayah, no need be so formal one la. Just call me Mann Da Rin Rok can liao, like I call you Chai Nee Ray Po Da, not Mister Chai Nee or whatever la.

Chai Nee Ray Po Da
Very well, Mann Da Rin Rok. Now, tell me your side of the story.

Mann Da Rin Rok
Ayah, there is no ‘my side’, ‘your side’ one, only got the truth. And I tell you the truth now. Just now, I hear the stupid Malay say the story ar, is all wrong la! I tell you what really happen. The policeman is my friend, his name is Po Lee Se Marne. Yesterday right, I want to see how he do his work, because I never see him when he work before. Then I tell him, I go hide somewhere so I won’t, how you say ar, interfere, right? Ah, so I don’t interfere with his work. So I go and hide somewhere. Then I saw him tell some Malay people to go somewhere, I didn’t hear properly. Then they argue for a while, then I saw something ar, wa so rude ar! He go and shi shi on Po Lee Se Marne leh! You say rude or not? Ya right? Ah, then of course he take his club thing and whack him la! Right thing to do what! Then the Malay people not happy la, then they beat him lor! Now he in hospital la. Then I come out and I shout at the rude Malay people, then they start hitting me for no reason leh! See, I got so big bruise from them! *shows bruise on arm* Ah, I damn suay la. Then of course I not happy la, then I fight with them. But I think the rest of the things the Malay say is more or less correct la, the people with the hard shield thing come and give us the curfew, then we must wait until early morning then we can fight again. Eh, I don’t think there is any more things to say.

Chai Nee Ray Po Da
Thank you very much for letting me interview you, Mann Da Rin Rok.

Mann Da Rin Rok
Ayah, no need say thank you one la, as long as you join us so we can have someone with very high rank, wa, then we sure beat the rude Malays one! *Chinese cheers*

Chai Nee Ray Po Da
Err, I don’t think I will have time for that, Mann Da Rin Rok, sorry. I still have a lot of reporting to do.

Mann Da Rin Rok
Ayah, wasted la.

Chai Nee Ray Po Da
Now that we’ve heard both sides of the tale behind the race riot, what do the locals think about it?

Indian local
Ahh, these kind of ridiculous thing, they also want to fight about. I am just very lucky, that us Indians are not there. Why can’t they just, ehh how do you say it? Kiss and make up? Yaa, I don’t understand you Chinese and Malay people, everything they also need to fight about. Hiaz, I cannot tahan with all this noise, every night I cannot sleep. I only want the fighting to stop!

Caucasian local
Wow, I can’t believe that there’s a riot right now! I’ve never experienced a riot before. Are they common here in Singapore? Oh, pardon me, I’ve just moved here from America/England a few months ago. What do I think about it? Well, since it’s about such a minor mistake, I think they should bring the case forward to a judge in court. Oh? You don’t have a court yet? Oh, then the government should step forward and settle this dispute. Hey, do you know where this riot is taking place at? *takes out camera* I want to document my first ever riot here in Singapore!

Ma Ley Ray Po Da
This is Ma Ley Ray Po Da.

Chai Nee Ray Po Da
And Chai Nee Ray Po Da, reporting live from the race riot.

Ma Ley Ray Po Da
Now, back to the studio and to Neo Se Rei De.

Neo Se Rei De
Thank you, Ma Ley Ray Po Da and Chai Nee Ray Po Da, our special foster brother reporters.
What will the results of the race riot be? Will the Malays triumph? Or will the Chinese domain all? Stay tuned to Channel News Singapore for the latest updates on the race riot. Now on to other news… *fade out*

The end. (Or is it?)

Neo Se Rei De
Good afternoon and welcome to the Daily Lunchtime News on Channel News Singapore. My name is Neo Se Rei De. The date today is 3 August, 1964, the time now is 1.01pm.
Breaking news from the recent race riot: it has finally ended! 11 days after it has started, the race riot has cooled off just yesterday, and we have an exclusive coverage with the current leaders of the post-rioting groups. Foster brother reporters Ma Ley Ray Po Da and Chai Nee Ray Po Da are here to present the great news.

Chai Nee Ray Po Da
Hey! It’s Chai Nee Ray Po Da.

Ma Ley Ray Po Da
And it’s Ma Ley Ray Po Da.

Chai Nee Ray Po Da
And it really is wonderful news that the race riot that had lasted 11 days has finally ended yesterday!

Ma Ley Ray Po Da
Now, here with us are Mu Slim Rul and Mann Da Rin Rok, whom, if you would remember, we had interviewed about 10 days ago. Previously, they were mortal enemies. Now, they suddenly have resolved their problems! What happened, guys?

Mu Slim Rul
Eh, this is an exclusive coverage ah, so what we’re about to tell you is not revealed to the other nosy reporters. We trust you because you have trusted us before, about a week ago, when you interviewed us? Yeah, now it’s our turn to trust you.

Mann Da Rin Rok
Ok, this is what happened. Yesterday, we were fighting, as usual, and somehow we were pushed to the front of the row, but at the side, then a passer-by call out, “Ay! Why you all are fighting ar?” Then I expect Mu Slim Rul to reply, and he expect me to reply, then in the end we realize that we forgot why we fight nia!

Mu Slim Rul
So we agreed on a small truce while we sit in a room and discuss why we were fighting. We also watched the recorded news of the interview you did of us. Then we watched the video, and after that, we agreed that it was the boy who peed on the policeman’s fault, and anyway, he is dead, so we wonder, why do we continue to seek revenge? The insulter is dead, the policeman is alive and well… So we discuss with our groups, and we all agreed that we shouldn’t continue fighting, or else more people will kenna kill. You know, 20 something people died and 400+ people were injured!

Mann Da Rin Rok
Yah, a lot right? Then we see the place where we fight, wa very destroyed ah! So we combine together and repair the place, now still repairing. Oh, by the way, when we finish the interview ah? Can faster, because I need to guide the people to help repair the place.

Ma Ley Ray Po Da
We are finishing soon, Mann Da Rin Rok. Wow, what an interesting coverage!

Chai Nee Ray Po Da
Yes, I bet the other reporters didn’t have a chance to get such unique information!

Mu Slim Rul
Of course, we just told the other nosy reporters that the government make us stop one.

Mann Da Rin Rok
Ya, but actually, we just want to embrace diversity and build up our community lah! You know, that’s our motto now.

Chai Nee Ray Po Da
Oh, well then, I wish you both good luck. Wow! This event will certainly be recorded in history!

Ma Ley Ray Po Da
It certainly will be! Now that the chaos is over, Singapore will be calm once more!

Chai Nee Ray Po Da
Well, at least till the next riot… Anyway, till then, this is Chai Nee Ray Po Da.

Ma Ley Ray Po Da
And Ma Ley Ray Po Da, signing off! Now, back to the studio. Neo Se Rei De?

Neo Se Rei De
Thank you guys, and that was Chai Nee Ray Po Da and Ma Ley Ray Po Da, our exclusive foster brother reporters.
Singapore will remain quiet for a while, that is, until the next riot. How soon will that arrive? Stay tuned on Channel News Singapore for the latest updates on Singapore’s news. On other news today… *fade out*

The end. (Really, ITE. Aka, It’s The End.) *Bloopers*
